Indigenous People, the foundation of our nation
"Indigenous People the Hope of our Nation"
Do you know the famous tattoo artist Apo Whang od? She is often called the "last" mambabatok(traditional Kalinga tattoo artist), and she is part of the "butbut" people. As an acknowledgement for the celebration of the "Indigenous Peoples Month and the 27th Year Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) Commemoration from October 1-30 with the theme “Mga Katutubo at Katutubong Dunong: Pahalagahan, Pangalagaan at Parangalana.” We are gonna talk about how the theme promotes and protects the rights and culture of the Indigenous People.
The National Indigenous Peoples Month provides opportunities to highlight the rights of the Indigenous people, enriched in IPRA. This law ensures the protection of ancestral domains, cultural integrity, and self-determination for the Indigenous People.
With this, they have established educational programs, dialogues, and cultural exhibits that are found nationwide. This raises the awareness of the unique heritage and struggles of the Indigenous People. Which fosters appreciation, respect, and the cultural significance of their: customs, tradition, diverse history, and viable practices that have been passed down through generations.
The month-long celebration also reinforces the importance of inclusivity. By encouraging active participation of Indigenous People in decision making processes, specifically ones that affect their communities, the month emphasizes their relevance in contributing to nation-building. This year's theme calls for collective action to preserve Indigenous knowledge systems and practices that are crucial for environmental preservation, disaster resilience, and community development.
This month does not only protect Indigenous heritage, which is one of the most significant aspects of the month. As it focuses on safeguarding Indigenous heritage, it also honors and pays tribute to the resilience and contributions of Indigenous people. As we celebrate Indigenous Peoples Month in this year 2024, it is a reminder that the Indigenous People of the Philippines have such a rich cultural diversity that defines the nation. By valuing, nurturing, and honoring the Indigenous People and their knowledge, the country takes a vital step toward building an inclusive and equitable society. One that recognizes and respects the contributions of its first inhabitants.
